February 28, 2012

Culture & Events, Melbourne

Grab your glad rags. From 8th-15th March 2012 the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival will be in full swing around the streets of Melbourne. We caught up with designers Nyssa and Kerry from Above Label to find out what’s new on the catwalk, what our oh so fashionable visitors can expect, and what makes Melbourne style so unique..

How do you get dressed in the morning?

Well as Nyssa likes to joke, you’re never fully dressed without a collar so we generally tend to pick out a shirt or jacket first.

What makes the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival different and what can visitors expect?

The festival is always exciting because of the in season aspect. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing something amazing on the runway and then be able to go in to the shop the next day and pick one up.

Describe a typical working day at the show

The fantastic part about participating in the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival is the team of experts who coordinate the group shows. A typical day for us as designers typically involves watching a dress rehearsal and giving any final notes, and then getting ourselves ready for a celebration of the season.

What inspires your designs?

We approach design from a structural point of view. We like to apply a set of construction ideas to what we consider classic wardrobe items and then manipulate those outcomes.

Where do you love to shop in Melbourne?

For clothes we love Alice Euphemia and for shoes we always shop at soleDevotion on Degraves and Collins street around Melbourne’s laneways.

Favourite stylish place to stay or eat in Melbourne?

Recently tried The Aylesbury on Lonsdale St, the gnudi dish is particularly tasty! Taking the day trip out to the Heidi Museum of Modern Art and stopping for lunch at the cafe vue is a guaranteed great day as well!

Throughout March 2012, there will be a variety of free and ticketed events, from fashion-inspired artistic and creative installations to internationally touring exhibitions, forums and photographic works. Is there anything a visitor to Melbourne definitely shouldn’t  miss?

The fashion films shown at the ACMI (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Federation Square) throughout the week are always worth noting, especially the Bill Cunningham documentary. We’re also participating in the no home fashion film event which is shaping up to be three days of great, independently made fashion films.
