Spa out: Relax, you’re in Daylesford…

Spas & relaxation

On your big adventure through Australia? In need of some pampering? The natural spas outside Melbourne may be just the tonic…

Natural mineral springs are fizzing and popping to the surface like  champagne. The rolling countryside is unexpectedly lush. And based here amidst the quaint townhouses (built by Italian-Swiss miners over 100 years ago) are some of the best holistic and massage therapists in the whole of Australia. This is spa country. Wonderfully romantic and perfect if you’re seeking a little R’n’R (well deserved or otherwise), the relaxing haven of Daylesford is also only a leisurely hour’s drive away from Melbourne.

On the road to relaxation... Daylesford

The spas

Historic and healing

Sometimes original is best. To experience the mineral-rich baths the way they used to, head to the Hepburn bathhouse and spa. Opened in 1895, the baths received a $13m revamp in 2008, restoring many of the original features and making use of the natural light with long panels of glass.  If you want to give traditional public bathing a go, the therapists at Hepburn recommend you first bathe privately in a pure mineral bath, after which your therapist will then guide you through the age-worn corridors to the historic baths, where for over a century thousands have been replenished and healed, and you can find your own personal space.

Days out from Melbourne

Spa with a view

For fine food and relaxing massages, The Retreat at the Lake House Daylesford will make your mouth water. With a dreamy location right on the lake, people travel across Australia to visit the fabulous restaurant and internationally awarded wine cellar. But best of all is the blissfully relaxing Salus day spa, whose signature treatments include a private treetop mineral spa.

The luxurious

With treatments which include chocolate mud wraps and jurlique facials, a specialisation in hot stone massages and an ethos to only use local Australian grown produce, it’s little wonder the award-winning Daylesford Day Spa has become one of our favourite hideaways. The creamy rooms welcome you with open fires and pillowy soft furnishings. With just a day away you can even fit in their most indulgent treat, the ‘art of relaxation’ package, whose gruelling six hour schedule includes a rose milk spa, massage, an antioxidant body exfoliation, a milk and honey wrap, a facial, a hand treatment, foot treatment and a gourmet lunch.

Fun and informal

If you thought spas were all about posh hotels, white marble and pan pipes, relax, and roll on over to Endota Spa. These laidback and friendly spas are the fresh face of pampering with a funky slate and green décor, billabong paths, fully organic products, and fun packages like the ‘splash out’ (an all day spa experience which includes the delicious sounding yoghurt cocoon and full body massage) and ‘made for man’ facials, so a great one for the guys too.
